Keeping Teeth Healthy During an Orthodontics Treatment

OrthodonticsProper teeth and gum care are essential during an orthodontics treatment. When you have braces or an aligner, your teeth are more vulnerable to decay, and your gums are more vulnerable to disease. Take these liabilities seriously by learning how to clean your teeth and gums correctly and thoroughly during this time of dental improvement.

Not only will learning proper dental care help to prevent decay during your orthodontics treatment, but it will also create an excellent oral hygiene habit that will extend for the rest of your life. This will help to prevent emergency dental visits and unnecessary financial expenses in the future.

Keep up healthy routines

While a patient is straightening his or her teeth, it is important to maintain a proper diet. When patients eat certain foods, they increase the risk of decay. Patients can also get uncomfortable food particles stuck in the braces that are difficult to remove. When wearing aligners, patients need to watch what they eat because certain foods may cause bacteria growth within the aligner.

In other cases, certain can stain or discolor the aligner. As a general rule, do not eat anything hard, fibrous, with high acidity, or anything sticky. Also, try to avoid sugary or acidic drinks like soda. Always remove the aligner when eating and drinking. It is also crucial to brush and floss after each meal.

During an orthodontics treatment, it is important to continue brushing and flossing twice daily. We also encourage patients to brush and floss more often. This will help prevent decay, bacteria growth, and it will ensure that the gums stay healthy and disease free.

Flossing:

Even with braces, patients need to continue flossing no matter how complex it may seem. There are specialized flossing tools for braces, such as an appliance known as a proxy brush. The proxy brush has a specific shape for use with braces. Proxy brushes allow patients to insert the flosser above and below the braces line for optimal cleaning.

These flossing tools are not a substitute for brushing. Always brush following flossing with a fluoride toothpaste. Patients can also use regular floss by sticking an end above the wire and pulling back and forth. Flossing with an aligner is much like flossing before alignment, except that patients with an aligner need to floss more often. Floss in the morning, evening and after every meal as frequently as one is able. Never allow food particles to remain between the teeth while the patient is wearing the aligner as this will encourage bacteria growth and decay.

Brushing:

Brush your teeth after flossing with any orthodontics treatment. Patients need to brush their teeth more frequently while going through the alignment process. With aligners, remove the aligner and clean it with warm water so that it will not harbor its own grime or bacteria.

Keep these cleaning methods in mind throughout your orthodontics treatment, and do them often. Do not let your teeth suffer from decay during your treatment so that they remain healthy and beautiful. Visit Smilow Family Dentistry, P.C. for more information regarding your dental care.
