What Does Your Family Dentist Diagnose During Your Checkup?

Your Family Dentist can be quite beneficial in helping you diagnose any issues you may have during your checkup. It is highly recommended that you visit a dentist at least once every six months to ensure that your mouth is in top shape, inside and out. Due to their extensive training, a family dentist can do anything that a general dentist can and more, specifically being able to treat patients of all ages, from babies to the elderly. This allows each member of the family to have a good relationship with their dentist.

The checkup procedure

During your checkup, the family dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and mouth. Examining all three parts will allow them ample space to identify and look for any sort of potential issues, primarily in the form of diseases, buildup or decay.

The main goal of a family dentist is to help the patient keep their oral health and hygiene in top condition and identify any potential issues before they become more serious. Stopping decay or diseases early is the number-one way to keep your mouth clean. The examination consists of probing, examining and visually checking for issues such as loose teeth, damaged teeth or the presence of bacteria.

Plaque or gum disease

Two main things a family dentist looks for are plaque or gum disease. Dental plaque is a soft, clear coating on the surface of the teeth that is due to a buildup of bacteria. Getting your teeth cleaned regularly can avoid this issue completely.

Gum disease is more serious and attacks the patient’s gum line. If left unattended, this can result in further gum recession and even missing teeth!

Cavities

Since family dentists also specialize in kids, they are always looking for signs of cavities. Cavities are essentially a buildup of bacteria that can cause damage to teeth structure and eventually lead to larger issues, such as tooth disease, tooth decay and even tooth loss. Plaque grows from sugary bacteria that hides within your gum enamel.

When children lack proper oral hygiene, they are likely to suffer a cavity or two. This is also due to baby teeth, as they lack the strength and size that come with adult teeth. As a result, they are more susceptible to periodontal diseases and cavities in general. Having dental checkups is crucial to maintaining their perfect smile and oral health.

Can we answer any questions for you?

Even though seeing the dentist can be quite daunting for some, the process is absolutely necessary for a clean mouth. Luckily, a family dentist is trained to service and cater to both children and adults. Your teeth are important, so treat them with care!
